Teachers Should Learn from Salesmanship.

There’s something important to learn from “How To Get The Sales You Want” if you’re a teacher. Yes, it’s about sales. But teachers are also in the business of selling. We sell information, concepts, ideas, knowledge, hope, and….the sky is the limit to what a teacher can sell.

I’m not talking about selling things for money. I’m talking about the teacher’s job to have their student ‘buy’ their teacher’s idea. To understand it and take it on for themselves.

I love Helbig’s advice for salespeople.

“Understand the value of your product or service.”  Have you really taken the time to know your material? Do you know the ins and outs? Can you anticipate the questions your students will ask, and are you prepared to answer them?

STOP!  You know your material in and out NOT so you can hammer it over your students. You learn your material so you can find a way to help it  solve a pain point for your student.  ”If they aren’t in pain, they don’t need what you have to sell.” (Helbig.)

“Seek to solve.” What would happen if Teachers started asking students more questions about what they need English class for? Do you really know the issues your students need solving? Do you SHAPE your course to meet those needs? WHAT WOULD HAPPEN?  Would you waste time, or would you become a more efficient teacher?

What can YOU learn from a salesperson?
